Why Chiang Mai?

Leave the crowded big cities behind and see Chiang Mai. Enjoy the natural scenery of the mountains and the countryside and the city called the "Rose of the North." Don't put it off until the end of your Thai holiday. If you dream of seeing the "real" Thailand don't miss the ancient capital of the northern Lanna Kingdom.

Discover hundreds of years of history on every street. Chiang Mai (the new city) was founded in 1296 by King Mengrai of the Lanna (million rice fields) Kingdom.

Shop in the bustling Night Bazaar for Hill Tribe handicrafts or in the quiet of luxury gem shops. Learn how much better you can feel after a traditional Thai healing massage. Eat some of the most exciting and delicious foods of your life on a fine linen tablecloth or while perched on a street vendor's plastic stool.

Wander through a golden temple then chat with young monks under a tree. The city has more than 300 Buddhist temples (wats.)

Trek through primitive Hill Tribe areas or ride an elephant. Raft down a lazy river or whitewater if you prefer. Venture off road with 4x4's or dirt bikes.

Tour, sightsee and shop or just relax and enjoy life.

The second time you come will be for the smiles of people genuinely happy to see you.

Welcome

A note about content on this site:

This whole project began with the idea of having a "personal site" on the internet that would pass on some of the things I know and like about Chiang Mai. I also wanted an "easy" to access notebook of resource information that could answer my questions and that I could point others to as well.

Of course I've already experienced more than one "What have I gotten myself into." moment but it's too late to turn back now. I'm committed to the area now and I hope this effort can be useful to visitors and to those like me with a family and home here.

All mentions or recommendations are entirely my own and are based on my research and personal experience. No compensation of any kind has been asked for or accepted.

If you would like to make a recommendation, give a tip or pass along an interesting story, click here to visit the "My Chiang Mai" page.
