Art Cafe'
291 Thapae Rd
A popular corner cafe has black and white tile floors and cozy booths with a good view of the Thapae Gate. A good spot for tourist watching and a rest from your walking tour. The menu offers good, familiar fare, from steaks, Mexican dishes and Italian to meatloaf, cake and coffee.$
Bake and Bite
6 Soi 1, Kotchasan Road
The first installment (another on Chang Khlan) of a well hidden but excellent small bakery. Great pies, cakes, sandwiches and coffee.$
Chiang Mai Saloon
Loi Kroh Road, 150m from Night Bazaar
American-styled burger and steakhouse with good home style southern food.$
Da Stefano
Soi 2, Chiang Moi Kao Road
Just a few steps down the small soi where Thapae Road ends at the gate plaza. Comfortable trattoria atmosphere with fresh pasta and favorites like minestrone, proscuitto and melon antipasti, traditional pizzas, gnocchi, calzone and risotto. Desserts include tiramisu, gelato, carrot cake and sundaes. French and Italian wines, and traditional Italian spirits.
Also operates La Gondola at the Mae Ping Condo. The best choice for romantic, under the stars dining in Chiang Mai.$$
The Dukes
Charoenrat Road
Between Nawarat Bridge and the Chiang Mai branch of the Tourism Authority Office, just across the river from the Night Bazaar area. Definitely in the running for having the best steaks in town. Comfortable and relaxed atmosphere with excellent service.$$
Haus Munchen
115/3 Loi Kroh Road
Genuine German food and beer just a few steps from Chang Khlan Road in the Night Bazaar.$$
Jerusalem Falafel
Moon Muang Road opposite Tapae Gate
Good Middle Eastern food and delicacies.$
JJ Bakery
388 Tapae Road
Good coffee, breakfast and sandwiches just a short walk up the busy street from the gate area. $
Le Coq d'Or
68/1 Koh Klang Road
In a nicely landscaped villa with small dining rooms. French haute cuisine. A long time favorite for fine dining in Chiang Mai. Many say it's the best restaurant in the area.$$$
Mike's Burgers
Kotchasan Road
A small open air diner at the end of Chiang Moi Kao Road at the moat. Sit on a stool right on the sidewalk for a decent burger. fries or onion rings, a bowl of chili and a beer.$
Pum Pui Italian Restaurant
24 Soi 2, Moon Muang Road
Seating in a quiet garden, complimentary Italian breads served with the meals, a well planned menu with lots of salads and antipasto. Good service and moderate prices make it one of my favorites.
Queen Victoria Inn
Proppaklao road, near Chang Phuak gate, north side of the Moat
English style pub with a full English breakfast, pub lunch and steakhouse menu, with a good selection of beers. $$
Smile House Breakfast Buffet

Sometimes what you need more than anything else is a good substantial breakfast to begin the day. Standard American fare, well done.$
U. N. Irish Pub
24/1 Ratwithi Road
Fresh baked breads and solid pub style food as well as a Thai menu. Beer on tap and a pleasant garden seating area.$
Zest Restaurant
Moon Muang Road (near Tapae Gate)
Nice outdoor seating area on busy Moon Muang or a quiet area of comfortable booths away from the noise. A pleasant afternoon resting stop with a fresh bakery and a healthy menu with good service.$
