The State Railway of Thailand operates the Chiang Mai Railroad station that is located at 27 Charoen Muang Road in the Amphur Muang (central metropolitan district) of the city. The station is the northern terminus of the Northern Line and travel towards Chiang Rai and beyond relies on scheduled bus service.
Although there are stops between, the most common bookings are direct between Chiang Mai Station and Hualamphong Station in Bangkok.
1st Class Express service consists of a private compartment with two sleeping berths, a washbasin and air-conditioning. The berths have a cushion, pillow and blanket. The toilet is shared (no private toilet). If you plan to travel alone and require a private compartment, two first-class tickets must be purchased.
2nd Class Express is also air-conditioned but without a private compartment. Each berth has a curtain, cushion, pillow and blanket. The price varies depending on whether you book an upper or lower berth.
The Sprinter Train is a special Express train with air-conditioning and comfortable reclining seats, similar to those in coach. There are no sleeping berths.

* No advance reservations are available for the train in Thailand. A seat or berth is guaranteed only when a ticket has been purchased. Tickets may be purchased at the train station or purchased for you by a travel agent.
* Children under 3 years may travel at no charge. Between 3 years and 12 years, children whose height does not exceed 110 cm. pay 50% of the adult price (no seat is guaranteed.)
* Luggage Allowance - 1st class 50 kg; 2nd class 40 kg; others 30 kg.
* Please board at the originating station specified on the ticket; otherwise, the reservation will be canceled automatically.
* Postponement of journey must be made not later than 3 days before departure time and is subject to a 100 Baht fee for each ticket.
* Refunds for tickets must be made not later than 7 days before departure time. There is 50% cancellation fee for each ticket.
* The difference in fares and supplementary charges will not be refunded if passengers change options to travel in a lower class.
* The State Railway of Thailand accepts no responsibility for lost tickets.
