Chiang Mai Museums



Chiang Mai Air Museum

A mixed collection of relic planes abandoned by the Japanese at the end of WWII and newer equipment of the Royal Thai Air Force. Details of the military history of the area during the 20th century.

City Arts and Culture Center

Located in an elegant old building built in 1924 as the Provincial Hall. The front (eastern) part of the building contains permanent exhibits on local history and culture including everyday life. The rear section is dedicated to cultural activities, temporary exhibits, a souvenir shop, lecture theater, an archive and an exhibition hall for Lanna arts.

Open: Tuesdays to Sundays including public holidays (closed on Mondays) from 8.30a.m.-5p.m.

Admission is 90 baht for adults, 40 baht for children.

Chiang Mai National Museum

The Fine Arts Department has assigned this museum to be the centre of education and preservation of art and culture of Chiang Mai and upper northern Thailand, the old Lan Na Kingdom. Their Majesties the King and Queen graciously presided over the opening of the museum on 6 February 1973. The museum is designed as a Thai style building with a traditional northern of Lan Na style rooftop.

Chiang Mai-Lampang super Highway

Dara Phirom Museum

The beautifully preserved home of Princess Dara Rasmi, a consort of the great King Chulalonghorn and the half-sister of the chief Prince of Lanna during that time in the 19th century. She played a key role in maintaining the traditions and culture of Chiang Mai. Many outstanding pieces of furniture and art are on display.

Lanna Architectural Museum

Opposite the Numismatic Museum (see below) on Ratchadamnoen Road. A look at the traditional northern Thai design and construction.

Museum of World Insects and Natural Wonders

A quirky but interesting collection of unusual insects of all shapes and sizes. Personal tours are given in English from the owner with particular emphasis on research into mosquitoes. Displays include all 422 varieties of mosquitoes native to Thailand.

Numismatic Museum (The Treasury Hall)

An exhibition of antique Thai coins, insignia of rank, and other related artifacts from public and private collections.053-22 4237/8

Postal Museum

A small collection of postal stamps of Thailand.The museum is located across from the Mae Ping Post Office near Woororot Market

Open Tuesdays - Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (free)




Sbun Nga Textile Museum

Part of the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center (near the airport). There are more than 6,000 pieces old and new textiles on display.

Open daily except Wednesdays from 10-12 a.m. and 1-9 p.m.

Admission is 100 baht for adults, 50 baht for children, students and the handicapped.

Tribal Museum

Located in Ratchamankla Park, the museum shows the cultures of Northern Thailand's hill-tribes, including the Akkha, Hmong, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, and Mien. Displays include a large number of costumes, jewelry, musical instruments and everyday items of the various tribes. Well worth the visit.

Buddhist Art

University Art Museum

Operated by the Fine Arts Faculty of Chiang Mai University. An enterprising collection of art from the north of Thailand funded on a shoestring budget. Look for young talent, the occasional foreign artist and some established national artists.

Wat Gate Museum

An eclectic collection of items with historical interest located in the temple. Among the exhibits are an old Siamese 'White Elephant' flag and a collection of phonographs dating back more than 100 years.
