The Chiang Mai Bus Station on Charoen Muang Road (about one km. from the city center) is the principle inter-city bus terminal. Telephone numbers are 053-242-664 and 053-241-449.
For shorter trips, primarily within the province, buses depart the Chang Pheuak bus terminal(053-211-586) on Chotana Road.
Guesthouses in both Bangkok and Chiang Mai will sell tickets for "Special VIP" buses running mainly between Khao San Road in Bangkok and the guesthouse. These vary wildly in reliability, comfort and cleanliness with most being at the bottom of the scale. We recommend the much more efficient and dependable public bus system.
Types of Chiang Mai Bus Service
* "VIP - 24" - There are only 24 seats each row having a pair of seats on the right and only a single seat on the left. Primarily used on overnight Chiang Mai bus services.
* "VIP - 32" - Much like the "24" bus but with 32-34 seats, which have good leg room and recline. Basic meal included and freshly laundered shrink-wrapped blanket provided.
* First class (chan neung) Generally take the most direct routes and makes few stops. Blue and white in color, air conditioned, blanket usually provided. Typically has 40 seats but some double-decker types seat 60+. Snacks and drinking water are included. Most have a toilet on board.
* Second class (chan song) Often takes a less direct route than other classes. Usually 45-48 seats per bus, air conditioned (some provide blankets, some do not), and most do not have an on-board toilet (but this isn't usually a problem due to the frequent stops.)
* NORMAL (rot duan) Skips some stops, but no other frills. Identifiable by the orange colour. Size varies, with the largest having around 65 seats (five seats per row) as well as an open space across the back of the bus for cargo.
* Local - relatively slow, Chiang Mai busses can be cramped when full. Stops at every village and wide spot in the road along the way.
